Second Language Required Police Departments
Second Language Required Melanie Martinez Current Issues in Criminal Justice Everest University Online Second Language Required The United States of America is loaded with numerous societies, dialects, and legacy. With numerous citizensââ¬â¢ predecessors starting from different nations, it is no big surprise that pretty much every language has made it into America. Law requirement can be postponed by these dialects, however. Officials can profit by being bilingual, however that isn't the truth for most departments. With Spanish being the second, or even first, language of most residents, it is fundamental for law authorization to get familiar with this language, or another mainstream one. It can help keep away from disarray from a suspect not reacting or forestall a superfluous passing. At the point when an official can communicate in more than one language it might help spare lives. In the event that a watch vehicle pulled up to a house where an unanswered 911 call was made, they might be entering a perilous zone. In the event that it was a meth lab that was going to explode, and the individual outside just communicated in Spanish, they could unwittingly enter the home and it detonate with them in it.That is a circumstance that could be forestalled with setting aside the effort to gain proficiency with another dialect. Despite the fact that getting each official to become familiar with another dialect would profit the impact of law implementation, the truth is disheartening. With officials working extended periods and in an upsetting activity, it doesn't permit a lot of time for officials to become familiar with another dialect (Hickey, 2012). Alongside strict spending plans of police offices, it doesn't permit the officials to learn it at work either. The truth is that officials simply don't have the opportunity to gain proficiency with another dialect. It would likewise make officials work significantly more; bringing about more additional time and it would confound staffing when learning it at work. Learning another dialect is gainful to the official and the police division in each city. It would evade entanglements and disarray in some random circumstance (Khashu, Rahman, & Shah, 2007). It likewise isn't generally a reality with the hours officials and the pressure manage on an every day basis.Time the board is the best way to complete it the assistance of the office, officials, and the financial plan. Sample Reactions Paper
Test Reading Reaction Paper The inquiry on page 4 of Miller is truly intriguing; in the event that you had an award where might you go to direct anthropological research and what might it be about? I thought as a student what I would do in the event that I ventured of a plane in some province. How might I even pick the district? Would you be able to pick any nation? Do you choose a spot first, and afterward what you will look into, or is it the opposite way around? I got the opportunity to respond to a large number of these inquiries in my preparation, yet didn't completely assemble it till I did fieldwork.I likewise realized there is nobody answer to how, when, and where hands on work is led. Such a significant number of variables go into the procedure, there essentially can't be a widespread fit for anthropologists. The synopsis of the four subfields of human sciences is entirely canny and clear. Somebody in class raised whether the Garbage Project (or garbology as itââ¬â¢s regu larly called) is extremely advantageous. I admit I think statically information can disclose to us a large portion of this. Further, with the set number of assets accessible to archeological I question if itââ¬â¢s a decent utilization of time and money. What about old developments and generally significant locales we have not investigated? In any case, an ongoing article in the New York Times Book Review made a few bits of knowledge I felt were appropriate to this theme. Talking about scholarly analysis, the creator said that the significant piece of scholastic research was that regularly the benefit of something was not evident until some other time. Something that doesn't have a ton of pertinence today might be significantly important not far off. Maybe trash paleohistory is such a field. Also, a piece I heard on NPR, with the anthropologist-in-living arrangement with the New York Sanitation office, tended to the point in a way I had not thought of. The anthropologist was very in fluential in the significance of getting sanitation, its move in present day society, and why some reflexivity on the issue is important. One of her significant activities has been to set up a historical center, which will house city archives on sanitation, including things like road clearing, for the city. Given these two things, I may give garbology somewhat more breathing space than I once did.I was satisfied by the segment Miller remembered for applied human studies, a subject we spread in incredible detail later on, as I feel it is significant. The reference to Paul Farmer, in an exchange box set apart from the remainder of the content, is astounding. Rancher is an anthropologist whose work I didn't get comfortable with till graduate school. Be that as it may, when I read his books I have been unendingly dazzled by his style of human studies. Rancher is both a clinical specialist and an anthropologist. He doesn't simply go study individuals in faraway spots; he goes to improve t heir lives. His energy and support should fill in as a guide for our entire field. Farmerââ¬â¢s trustworthiness about the work we do, and the commitments we ought to have to the individuals we researched with, isn't something I have run over in numerous spots. Tracy Kidderââ¬â¢s book on Farmer, Mountains Beyond Mountains, is a magnificent perused. Be that as it may, Famerââ¬â¢s own books are significantly progressively incredible, if somewhat more scholarly. I do feel a few things get hurried in the first chapter. The area on the historical backdrop of human sciences is brief. While this isn't a book, or a class so far as that is concerned, on the historical backdrop of anthropological hypothesis and strategy, a further advancement of the point is enlightening. The thoughts we have today are refined from thoughts that we had previously. Understanding that we have refined, and even deserted a few, thoughts exhibits the spot of human sciences on the planet. Additionally, you d on't have to rehash an already solved problem. Also, to convey the similitude further, a few wheels don't work. We take a gander at past thoughts so we can proceed onward from them.

You should get a little practice To people who are unfamiliar with dealing with controversy, it can be just a little bit difficult to get used to. If you belong to this camp, get a little practice, especially if the thought of some of the topics you might cover makes you stumble stutter or blush. Here are a few controversial topics you might consider: Should products that cannot be recycled no longer be produced? Should voluntary cannibalism be legalized? Would prison rehabilitation programs be more successful if brainwashing techniques were allowed on the inmates? Should international law prohibit the use of aggressive force as an initial response to non-violent contact from extraterrestrial civilizations? Should internet access be considered a right and provided by governments for free? Is promiscuity better for genetic diversity? Is it possible that creatures often considered mythological such as werewolves, vampires and fairies might actually exist Is the modern banking system evil? Should alcohol be prohibited worldwide? Should monarchy give way to oligarchy? Some of these topics may have readers questioning your sanity but they make excellent practice topics. This is an essay assignment at Menlo College, and I keep thinking of what I want in life to find my motif. I stare out of the window looking at the big mountains, thinking really hard about what my goal is for my life. Righteousness Vs. The Covenant Promises - 1488 Words
Chantaeââ¬â¢ Alexander BIBL3213: Romans Assignment 3 Professor Jesse Heath 5, November 2014 Righteousness vs. the Covenant Promises The Book of Romans has set the main foundation of Christianity among the Jewish people and Roman. This book has covered many different laws of the land that God has given his people. Paul tries to address the many questions that the Jewish people have about faith, laws and righteousness. In this essay I will address the current question that many people have concerning the right way to interpret the meaning of righteousness. Since there isnââ¬â¢t a right or wrong way; to interpret God message in Romans, I will state what I feel is the correct way of the interpretation. The righteousness of God is one of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦I feel that the righteousness of God meaning the righteousness God gives the people is and will always be the correct interpretation of righteousness, the message that God intended for us to grasp was to gain his righteousness and not to gain it by default. Proverbs 13:4 states that ââ¬Å"The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while t he soul of the diligent is richly suppliedâ⬠(Bible Gateway, Prov. 13.4). This passage teaches us that the Lord rewards those try. This passage is the reason why, I feel that the righteousness of God is earned. Simply because Romans 1:17 states that ââ¬Å"For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealedââ¬âa righteousness that is by faith from first to last, [a] just as it is written: ââ¬Å"The righteous will live by faith (Bible Gateway, Rom 1.17).â⬠Paul tells us that righteousness is given to the people, by God in verse 1:17. In this passage Paul reveals the revelation of God; he is the revelation of the righteousness (van Aarde 1). God pardons ââ¬Å"those who repent of their sinsâ⬠, while punishing the ââ¬Å"wickedâ⬠, [this shows the righteousness that God gives the people] (Sanders 305). He ââ¬Å"Godâ⬠gives all a chance to ask for forgiveness of their sins. It is the righteousness and tender mercy that the Lord has over his people. Some may beg to different and say that itââ¬â¢s the covenant promise that makes us righteous. Because God made a promise to all man before we entered the world, they feel that righteousness is given. DUI Paper free essay sample
After watching the interview of several DUI suspects who were Jailed for their offenses, I realized that what they went through could happen to anyone. Nobody ever thinks that theyll be the ones Jailed because of drunk driving and/or killing/ injuring one or more individuals because after all, its never going to happen to you, right? To begin with, although each interview was of a different person (many recurring individuals as well), they all had a few things in common: they started at a young age, ach person had more than one DUI, and they regretted the irrational decisions they made that impacted their lives so negatively. First of all, each person admitted that they started at a very young age such as 11, 12, 13, 8, and even 2 years old. The problem with drinking at an early age is that you become addicted quickly and for the rest of your life because its almost impossible to stop drinking then. We will write a custom essay sample on DUI Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Second, each individual claimed that they hadnt committed Just one DUI but several. One ndividual said they committed 5 DUIs, another said 3, one crashed into a pole due to drunk driving, the other had 2 aggravated DUIs, and yet another received 2 DUIs including aggravated driving. What this portrays is how difficult it can be to quit something youve done for so long. Individuals from the interview stated they committed several DUIs because they saw no harm in it, once you start, it gets worse, it becomes a part of life so you Just do it, etc. In the end, each person regretted what they did because no one likes feeling scared every day, kept in a small pace, and away from everyone you love. Furthermore, these people couldVe done numerous things so everything would turn out differently, such as: help from loved ones, recovery groups/programs, have someone sober drive, not have gotten drunk in the first place, and thought about what could happen as soon as they stepped into a car drunk. Because they didnt think twice about what they did, these individuals have many regrets such as giving up many opportunities (one woman gave up the chance to go to medical school), kids ot visiting them in Jail because their parent is an alcoholic, missing the birth of a grandchild (including the persons own birthdays, Christmases, etc. , and feeling that he was the reason for his fathers death. The advice these individuals have for parents of young teens is to create a good relationship with your kids and to be nosy, set a good example because if you drink theyre definitely going to think its okay and do the same, set boundaries and dont be their friend but rather a parent, be open with y our kids and earn their trust, and now that drinking is not okay at home or outside even if theyre away from you. In conclusion, these people are going through recovery in order to live better and improved lives. Theyve learned to open up to people about life in Jail; one woman tated that in Jail You cant be yourselt at all and that its no way to live your lite. One man even claimed that Jail time allowed him to sober up, while one of the youngest in the interview said that she was a part of many programs that helped her find herself.

Shakespeare otherness in othello free essay sample
Otherness is not always understandable but it gives the reader an idea as to why certain characters act as the way they do. Race is one of the main topics in Othello that Shakespeare goes ahead and plays with. Othello being the only black man in the story he is different from the main characters. He is seen as a man of dignity, respect, and pride. Othello is different from the perceived view of darker colored folks at the time. Shakespeare uses racial otherness to toy around with the readers view of the characters. Most potent, grave, and reverend signiors, my very noble and approved good masters,. Hath this extent, o more. Rude am I in my speech, And little blessed with the soft phrase of peace,.. (Othello 79-85) Othello has what people of his skin color were perceived not to have which is somewhat of an education. Shakespeare instilled the exact opposite of the readers perception into Othello. We will write a custom essay sample on Shakespeare otherness in othello or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Othello lets the Duke and all others know that he knows his place and tells them that he is not a good speaker, actually quite the awkward one but he switches the subject to the task at hand with having to go to Cyprus. Othello is seen using his quick whit at the beginning of the play to defer the Duke and men to the more important issue. Readers at this time would have been shocked to see a man of darker color with somewhat of a quick whit describing his best attributes to distract the Duke and let the duke know he knows his place. Shakespeare expressed to us the otherness in Othello because his battle experience and quick whit is possible for a man of his color Iago is the main cause of the entire ruckus that is going on throughout the playwright. He is responsible for the underlying Jealousy, trickery, and murderous revenge. Iago is seen as an educated individual who believes that he should be in a higher position like Cassio is. Iago is the biggest mystery throughout the playwright. His motives for the most part are unknown but he does mention why he is angry at times. Shakespeare uses lagos character to show the reader many things. Iago is white and he is othellos ensign. He is one of the most evil people having no motives for what he has done. He is a bitter man who feeds upon the torment of others to others. Shakespeare gives the reader an understanding of what type of person he is and also shows that a person of white upper class up bringing can be evil. He also shows the otherness of a white man serving under a darker skinned individual. Shakespeare brings up an interesting topic even hundred of years before its time. He shows the reader the otherness in Othello himself. Othello is a genuinely better person than Iago will ever be and he Just happens to be of darker color skin. l hate the Moor:0And it is thought abroad, that twixt my sheets0He has done my office: I know not ift be true;0But l, for mere suspicion in that kind,0Will do as if for surety. (Othello 5 ) . He uses the apparent rumor that Emilia is sleeping with Othello even though it is not true he uses it to fuel part of his hatred towards Othello. Iago ay be a pathological liar that has no motives for his selfish acts. Iago is a manipulative psycho and deep d own probably wants to make Othello die in misery. He wants Othello to die with the image/stereotype of being of darker colored skin. Iago wanted to portray to everyone that Othello was and still is a savage. Shakespeare shows that even though Othello is of darker skinned he is a good man who is completely the opposite of the stereotype during this time period. Iago also uses Othellos gift to Desdemona against him. Othello tells Desdemona that the handkerchief was given to his mother from his father to show he was faithful. Othello sees the handkerchief as a symbol of marital fidelity and Iago sees it as a ticket to ruin Othello. Iago taking the very symbol of Desdemonas fidelity and turning it into what Othello thinks is Cassios personal napkin drives Othello insane. This helps bring up a major topic that Shakespeare wanted his readers to know about hundreds of years before it was addressed which is equality towards women. Emilia goes out of her way to help her husband out because she is desperate for love and attention. Iago still refuses to give her the love she wants from him and ironically she is ultimately the one that takes him down. Emilia in wanting to help her husband out brings up a subject not spoken about by women during that time being unfaithful. Emilia speaking to Desdemona states, Who would not make her husband a cuckold to make him a monarch? I should venture purgatory fort. (4. 3). Emilia talks about cheating on her husband for his own personal gain. She refers to going to purgatory for her sin but only because she loves him and wants to keep trying to please him. Emilia also brings up another good point that if a man can be unfaithful woman can be unfaithful as well thus referring to that men and women should be qual. Shakespeare shows the otherness by bringing up these topics of infidelity, being unfaithful and equality for women. Another major message that Shakespeare portrays is feminism. The biggest hero in the story was not actually a hero more like a heroine. Emilia represents otherness as a character because she is willing to go above and beyond the rules to do what she thinks is right. Emilia could have kept her mouth closed in the end about what really happened but she didnt. Emilia rose above the cold treatment that her husband gave her and did what was right. Emilia let the truth out to set her and Desdemonas story straight and show that their word was better then lagds word a killed the woman he loved. Othello didnt even want to hear what Desdemona had to say instead he disrespected her and hit her. Othello did not show his true love for her. Shes gone, I am abused, and my relief must be to loathe her. Oh, curse of marriage that we can call these delicate creatures ours and not their appetites! I had rather be a toad and live upon the vapor of a dungeon than keep a corner in the thing I love for others uses (Othello Othello has an aside and expresses how pset he is that a man of his stature and importance can get played the way he thought he was by Desdemona. Othellos love is childish he automatically hates Desdemona for her supposed acts of infidelity. Othellos male pride is seen and crushed. Shakespeare wants the reader to know that the insight of women is very important and should not be disregarded. Shakespeare again has brought the reader some very interesting topics before their times. Feminism, infidelity, and equality are all seen in this play, which helps the reader to see the otherness Shakespeare has created with his characters.

The Basics of String Theory
The Basics of String Theory String theory is a mathematical theory that tries to explain certain phenomena which is not currently explainable under the standard model of quantum physics. The Basics of String Theory At its core, string theory uses a model of one-dimensional strings in place of the particles of quantum physics. These strings, the size of the Planck length (10-35 m), vibrate at specific resonant frequencies. Some recent versions of string theory have predicted that the strings could have a longer length, up to nearly a millimeter in size, which would mean theyre in the realm that experiments could detect them. The formulas that result from string theory predict more than four dimensions (10 or 11 in the most common variants, though one version requires 26 dimensions), but the extra dimensions are curled up within the Planck length. In addition to the strings, string theory contains another type of fundamental object called a brane, which can have many more dimensions. In some braneworld scenarios, our universe is actually stuck inside of a 3-dimensional brane (called a 3-brane). String theory was initially developed in the 1970s in an attempt to explain some inconsistencies with the energy behavior of hadrons and other fundamental particles of physics. As with much of quantum physics, the mathematics that apply to string theory cannot be uniquely solved. Physicists must apply perturbation theory to obtain a series of approximated solutions. Such solutions, of course, include assumptions which may or may not be true. The driving hope behind this work is that it will result in a theory of everything, including a solution to the problem of quantum gravity, and to reconcile quantum physics with general relativity, thus reconciling the fundamental forces of physics. Variants of String Theory The original string theory focused only on boson particles. Superstring theory (short for supersymmetric string theory) incorporates bosons with another particle, fermions, as well as supersymmetry to model gravity. There are five independent superstring theories: Type 1Type IIAType IIBType HOType HE M-Theory: A superstring theory, proposed in 1995, which attempts to consolidate the Type I, Type IIA, Type IIB, Type HO, and Type HE models as variants of the same fundamental physical model. One consequence of the research in string theory is the realization that there is an immense number of possible theories that could be constructed, leading some to question whether this approach will ever actually develop the theory of everything that many researchers originally hoped. Instead, many researchers have adopted a view that they are describing a vast string theory landscape of possible theoretical structures, many of which do not actually describe our universe. Research in String Theory At present, string theory has not successfully made any prediction which is not also explained through an alternative theory. It is neither specifically proven nor falsified, though it has mathematical features which give it great appeal to many physicists. A number of proposed experiments might have the possibility of displaying string effects. The energy required for many such experiments is not currently obtainable, although some are in the realm of possibility in the near future, such as possible observations from black holes. Only time will tell if string theory will be able to take a dominant place in science, beyond inspiring the hearts and minds of many physicists.

The Importance of Culture in Language Teaching, and the Implications Essay
The Importance of Culture in Language Teaching, and the Implications for the Role of the Teacher - Essay Example Language includes speech, written characters, numerals, symbols, and gestures of nonverbal communication. Language, of course, is not an exclusively human attribute. Even though they are incapable of human speech, primates such as chimpanzees have been able to use symbols to communicate. However, even at their most advanced level, animals operate with essentially a fixed set of signs with fixed meanings. By contrast, humans can manipulate symbols in order to express abstract concepts and rules and to expand human cultures. In contrast to some other elements of culture, language permeates all parts of society. Certain cultural skills, such as cooking or carpentry, can be learned without the use of language through the process of imitation. However, it is impossible to transmit complex legal and religious systems to the next generation by watching to see how they are performed. An individual, for instance, could bang a gavel as a judge does, but one would never be able to understand legal reasoning without language. Therefore, people invariably depend on language for the use and transmission of the rest of a culture. While language is a cultural universal, differences in the use of language are evident around the world. This is the case even when two countries use the same spoken language. For example, an English-speaking person from the United States who is visiting London may be puzzled the first time an English friend says "I'll ring you up." The friend means "I'll call you on the telephone." Similarly, the meanings of nonverbal gestures vary from one culture to another. Whereas residents of the United States commonly use and attach positive meanings t the "thumbs up" gesture, this gesture has... This essay stresses that some teachers and researchers have found it effective to present students with objects or ideas that are specific to the culture of study but are unfamiliar to the students. The students are given clues or background information about the objects and ideas so that they can incorporate the new information into their own worldview. An example might be a cooking utensil. Students would be told that the object is somehow used for cooking, and then they would either research or be informed about how the utensil is used. This could lead into related discussion about foods eaten in the target culture, the geography, growing seasons, and so forth. The students act as anthropologists, exploring and understanding the target culture in relation to their own. In this manner, students achieve a level of empathy, appreciating that the way people do things in their culture has its own coherence. This report makes a conclusion that from the above account of culture and its relationship with language, it becomes easy to understand that culture is the most important element in learning the second language. Language is a tool to communicate with people. When we learn a foreign language, we mean to discover new horizons of culture, ideology and the way of life of the people of target language. Hence, without having good knowledge of their culture, the knowledge of their language seems useless because in the absence of cultural awareness, we cannot communicate with them effectively. That is why the study of the culture into the language teaching is so much imperative.

Advanced Computer Engineering Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Advanced Computer Engineering - Essay Example The information prompts execution of certain functions as defined by the code developers. The source code enables programmers to understand the functioning of various applications through the written text. These codes are commonly utilised in differentiating various computer applications, performing similar functions. These applications are differentiated through the various commands required to perform specified functions. This exercise seeks to develop a program simulating performance of an 8-bit CPU. The whole process can be divided into three major sections of defining instruction set, describing simulator algorithm and writing the code for implementation of the identified simulator. This project could be defined through the following steps Identifying required bits Selecting the necessary instructions for the code Defining the required simulation algorithm Selecting the programming language being utilised in designing the code. Designing a simulator capable of simulating functio nality of 8-bit CPU. Testing the developed simulator design for compliance and similarity with required CPU. Concluding the project. Proposed solution The proposed CPU design shall involve various design choices and decisions aimed at improving the previous designs. In this example, the requirement needs writing of a program which simulates the performance of 8-bit CPU. The process begins with definition of instruction sets, which can be utilised by the CPU. The defined instruction set shall become the basis for developing CPU simulator algorithm, implemented through the C programming language. The C programming language could be identified as one which allows lexical variable scope, which makes the program become completely independent (King, 2008). This method remains the most commonly utilised programming language which much software remain compatible with. This make coding through this language sufficient as the systems could be utilised in many operations without experiencing d ifficulties. The process begins with consideration of the available options for breaking down the various instruction fields, to make complete Opcode, Addressing Mode and Operand. A format satisfying the basic CPU purposes shall be adopted for the context of this exercise. Within this exercise, 3-bit 8 independent Opcode shall be developed with, another bit being utilised in selection of the addressing mode, while the last four bits can be applied for the Operand. This will have created an 8-bit CPU, which can be utilised in undertaking various operations. Design Within the designing section, identification of the instruction set becomes the basis for beginning the designing process. The process of the CPU shall include loading of instructions into the register, thus the first instruction set identified shall be named LOAD. This instruction shall be associated with the main register as desired. The function shall be represented by LDA within the CPU. Following loading of the instruc tion the CPU shall also be required to store the entered information within the system. This shall become the second instruction set within the CPU, represented by STA. For the purposes of integrating arithmetic values within the CPU, a third instruction shall be called ADD, becomes necessary. Subtraction can be implemented through inclusion of negative integers within the system. Repetitive subtraction and addition components shall be utilised in implementing multiplication and division qualities. Other instruction sets could also be included to enhance the functioning and increase the number of operations, which the CPU can perform. The number of bits utilised in developing this

Into Thin Air Analysis Essay ââ¬Å"Brilliant. Vertiginously excitingâ⬠¦vibrantly imagined. An achievement of extraordinary depth and beauty of the natural world.â⬠ââ¬âRaul Dagmar Into Thin Air is based on a true story seen through the eyes of Jon Krakauer. He is a journalist and mountain climber who decides to climb the treacherous Mount Everest and joins the most disastrous expedition in history. Krakauer mixes in with the climbing service called Adventure Consultants, which is guided by Rob Hall who is also responsible for the lives of ten other climbers. The climb is structured into camps: Base Camp, Camp One, Camp Two, Camp Three and Camp Four. After spending weeks at Base Camp, the group makes a number of trips up to the other camps to speed up the acclimatization process. Throughout the climb to the summit, Krakauer significantly details his teammates, his guides and other expeditions on the mountain. He tries to link together a continuous timeline of the events that take place in the weeks they are on the mountain. Everest is a bare and harsh land. All of the clients have difficulty adjusting to the altitude, tiring easily and losing oxygen. The climbers experience in mountain climbing and at high altitudes variesââ¬âsome of them are qualified while others very inexperienced and highly dependent on the guides. Will they survive? ââ¬Å"â⬠¦[Krakauer] reveals that the human spirit has infinite ability to grow and can never be limited by circumstance. It will change the way you look at the obstacles of your own life and the American Dream.â⬠-Henry David Thoreau

The Way My Elementary School Delt With Age Disparity Essay
The way my elementary school delt with age disparity was by assigning each second grader a fifth grade ââ¬Å"buddy.â⬠I really wanted Jonah for my buddy. He was the coolest kid at school, and he liked baseball, just like I did. Like all the fifth graders, he was really excited to have a younger buddy and excitedly jostled his way into the room alongside his classmates. My teacher gave each child a half sheet of construction paper cut in a specific pattern - whoeverââ¬â¢s paper matched mine would be my buddy. Mine was red, as was Jonahââ¬â¢s. It seemed too good to be true. I felt delighted but became confused when I realized that Jonah was looking at me in a weird way, with a sort of pity and fear in his eyes. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s wrong?â⬠I asked. The look didnââ¬â¢t fade from his eyes. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re black, arenââ¬â¢t you? You must be a part of the METCO Program,â⬠he replied, his words long and drawn out as if he thought I couldnââ¬â¢t understand. I didnââ¬â¢t really understand at the time, but as a seven year-old, I was labeled. A ten year-old white American boy marked me as black. Because my skin was a little bit darker than his, he made a set of assumptions about my race and intelligence that were entirely false. I am half Indian and half European, so my skin is naturally a lighter shade of brown typical of my ancestors from Punjab. Why is it that despite centuries of our nation fighting racism, it still persists in 2016? But what are we fighting over? Race, but what is race? Biologically speaking, it relates to the
